Modules Curriculum Development

Curriculum Development

Curriculum development is a systematic process of planning, designing, organising, implementing, and continuously improving a course to ensure that students achieve meaningful learning outcomes. At the university level, an effective curriculum extends beyond preparing lecture content; it requires faculty members to thoughtfully align course objectives, learning outcomes, teaching strategies, learning activities, and assessment methods. A well-designed curriculum provides students with a structured learning journey that gradually develops knowledge, skills, and professional competencies while maintaining alignment with institutional and accreditation requirements.

This session introduces newly inducted faculty members to the principles of curriculum development and course design within the higher education context. Participants will explore the process of developing a curriculum that is student-centred, outcome-driven, and responsive to contemporary educational needs. The session highlights the importance of constructive alignment, whereby learning outcomes, teaching methodologies, learning experiences, and assessment strategies work together to achieve the intended educational goals.

The module further emphasizes the practical aspects of designing and reviewing courses. Participants will learn how to formulate measurable Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs), organise course content into logical learning sequences, prepare effective course outlines and syllabi, and select teaching strategies that actively engage students in the learning process. The session also explores the integration of active learning approaches, educational technologies, authentic assessment practices, and inclusive teaching principles to ensure that curricula remain relevant, flexible, and responsive to diverse student needs.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the principles and importance of curriculum development in higher education.
  • Design courses using constructive alignment between learning outcomes, teaching strategies, learning activities, and assessment methods.
  • Develop clear and measurable Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs) aligned with program objectives.
  • Organise course content into logical and progressive learning sequences that support student learning.
  • Prepare effective course outlines and syllabi that communicate expectations and learning pathways clearly.
  • Integrate active learning strategies, educational technologies, and inclusive teaching practices into curriculum design.
  • Evaluate and continuously improve curricula using student feedback, assessment evidence, and reflective teaching practices.
