Modules Teaching, Learning & Lesson Planning

Teaching, Learning & Lesson Planning

This session introduces newly inducted faculty members to the principles of effective lesson planning, learning dynamics, and instructional excellence. Teaching in higher education begins with understanding the essential qualities that distinguish outstanding educators from ineffective ones, relying on a dual foundation of high intellectual excitement and strong interpersonal rapport. To achieve excellence, university educators must recognise that teaching is not merely delivering content, but creating an engaging environment that inspires student curiosity, encourages active participation, and transforms classroom delivery into meaningful student learning outcomes.

The module further emphasises the implementation of active learning strategies to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical comprehension, turning passive listeners into active thinkers. At a biological level, learning forms and strengthens neural pathways among the brain’s 100 billion neurons, making active engagement essential to overcome the severe retention drop-offs typical of passive lectures. By incorporating group activities, peer discussions, debates, live polling, and strategic questioning, instructors accommodate diverse learning preferences and reinforce long-term concept retention.

Lesson planning provides the structured operational blueprint required to translate pedagogical theory into effective classroom execution, demanding that educators dedicate approximately 90% of their instructional effort to preparation and 10% to live delivery. Instructors structure this process through a systematic 5-step framework: capturing attention with a Bridge-In, evaluating prior knowledge via a Pre-Test, delivering core Content Input, conducting continuous Checks for Understanding, and concluding with a Session Closure. Sustained educational effectiveness relies on four overarching core principles: maximizing student-faculty interaction, demonstrating genuine passion, encouraging peer cooperation, and respecting diverse student learning styles.
