Assessment and feedback are fundamental components for both students and teachers, as they collectively determine the effectiveness of the learning process. Within the NUST system, student performance is evaluated continuously throughout the semester using multiple parameters, including:

• Class participation
• Mid-term and end-term projects
• Assignments
• Quizzes
• Mid-term examinations
• End-term examinations

Among these, mid-term and end-term exams carry relatively higher weightage. At the end of the semester, faculty members compile all assessment components to determine the final results.

This session focuses on the interconnected nature of assessment and feedback, highlighting how both elements complement each other. The facilitator discusses the key characteristics of an effective teacher, emphasizing how these traits influence the quality of feedback received from students. Drawing on personal experiences, it is explained that students often associate a teacher’s personal attributes with their teaching approach, which ultimately shapes their feedback.

The session further underscores the importance of adopting diverse and meaningful assessment strategies, particularly in the context of rapidly evolving AI tools. Participants are encouraged to incorporate innovative practices such as “smart assignments,” where students utilize AI tools in a constructive and ethical manner. Additionally, increasing the frequency of quizzes is suggested as a way to enhance student performance. From paper evaluation to grade calculation, participants are guided on integrating modern assessment techniques to make the process more effective and relevant.
